Why is Certification Important?

on May 18, 2015

As Jessyi mentioned in her previous post, there are several ways to find certified professionals to provide services to your child. Specifically, the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) provides a way to look up and contact Board Certified Behavior Analysts in your area. But it’s important to review why you should seek out a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA).

The BACB provides guidelines for best practices, ethical conduct, and training requirements for both initial certification and maintaining certification. Best practice guidelines are based on the most recent evidence-based treatments. This ensures that professionals in our field apply the most up-to-date and most effective treatments in the service of helping their clients.

Ethical conduct is extremely important in our field. The BACB provides guidelines for ethical conduct that govern everything from implementing best practice, business conduct, and maintaining professional relationships with clients and employees. Certified professionals are required to seek out training in ethical conduct as part of maintaining their certification. By putting forth uniform guidelines on ethical conduct, the BACB ensures that you receive professional care from qualified individuals who maintain their ethical guidelines.

Perhaps most importantly, the BACB’s training guidelines ensure that those delivering Applied Behavior Analysis services are well trained in the basic theoretical underpinnings of Behavior Analysis, understand the many different techniques that can be used in Applied Behavior Analysis, and have clinical experience under the direction of a qualified supervisor. A Board Certified Behavior Analyst is going to know how to implement different behavior change techniques, when to use the techniques, and why those techniques work.

Additionally, BCBAs are required to attend conferences, workshops, and other trainings to maintain their certification. BCBAs continually stay informed of best practice, new clinical and theoretical scientific discoveries, and how to conduct themselves professionally in the workplace. A Board Certified Behavior Analyst should be near the top of any parent’s list when looking for services for their child. It comes with the promise of a well-trained professional who will continually work to improve their client’s skills using the best available treatment; an indispensable part of any treatment team.
